Casino Royale: The Ultimate Read for #WorldBookNight2013.

_wbnimagesReading is one of my passions in life. If I died reading The Count of Monte Cristo, I’d shuffle of this mortal coil with a big old smile on my face. Anything that involves books and reading automatically piques my interest, so imagine my excitement when I heard that World Book Night had come around again so quickly (I can’t believe it’ll be May next week!).

charlieBucketdownloadHaving submitted my application to be a World Book Giver last year, it was a pleasure to discover that my pitch had been successful. Now, receiving that email confirming you are A Chosen One is a magical, nerve-racking experience. It may sound geeky (bite me, I’m a self confessed bibliophile), but honest to God, I couldn’t contain myself. Imagine Roald Dahl’s Charlie Bucket discovering the Golden Ticket in Wonka’s Chocolate Bar, and you have an inkling as to the amount of pure exhilaration which flooded my veins.

My chosen book this year was Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale. This is my favourite Fleming book and the first Bond adventure I read which originally got me hooked on the sexy super spy. It is also Bond’s first outing in Fleming’s masterpiece and I have no difficulty believing that the book is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year (it really is a timeless tome).

CR_imagesAs I headed into town to dish out the books, I couldn’t help but reflect on how insanely lucky I am to have books at my fingertips. There are a tonne of people out there, who don’t have the resources to read and that’s what I love about World Book Night. It gives people with a real passion for books, to spread the joy of reading and champion this vastly underrated pastime. Because all it takes is a book and imagination to be transported to a different world and era. A hat tip to all the publishers who participated in this fantastic scheme and have given their books freely for distribution.

I gave my books out in less than 20 minutes, which is something of a record for me (it took 30 minutes last year).  The look of delight was reciprocal; on my face as I handed over the precious book, and on the recipients’ faces, who were cheery at getting an unexpected gift. To those who now have a book (I dished out) in your possession; I hope you enjoy and love the book as much as I do.

Happy Reading!

Writers Rocking The Octagon Theatre at the Best Of Bolton Gig.

Hey guys,

How have you all been? Spring has sprung, although it may not feel like it up north. Some people are still wandering the streets swathed in scarves (including yours truly), making us feel like prize pillocks when the sun eventually does make a delayed appearance. Now, it’s been a busy few weeks but I just wanted to fill you in on what I’ve been up to. I was thrilled to have my work performed at The Octagon Theatre as part of the Best of Bolton Gig last week. It’s a wonderful initiative championing local talent organised by The Octagon’s Associate Director and superlative Elizabeth Newman. The writers attended a table read the weekend before the show, and were given a chance to see their work being performed and provide input and feedback on the actors’ delivery.

To see what was previously in the mental mixing bowl of my mind, be performed on stage is always a buzz for me. My chosen piece was a dramatic reading of the Prologue of the Screaming Snowflakes Sequel. Writing is only one part of the creative process; direction and delivery are key components too. A special hat tip to Mark Conway and Isabel Ford, whose understanding of the writers’ work and perfect delivery was a talent that took my breath away. I loved their interactive style of acting, which really involved the audience and made the evening such a resounding success.

Bolton has a fantastic writers’ community and The Octagon’s Best of Bolton Gig is going from strength to strength. The evening was expertly covered by the always fabulous Mel Wallwork (you can click on the link here to her write up at This Is Lancashire). And yes, that is me in the picture above (I’m in the process of acquiring a larger image and will update asap). It was an absolute pleasure to connect with fellow writers and enjoy a literary evening in a town that has a big heart and a wealth of writing talent. And a special thank you to Elizabeth Newman, who made all this possible; you’re my guru.

Writing Quote #36 (George Orwell)

Reblogged from Screenwriting from Iowa:

"All writers are vain, selfish, and lazy, and at the very bottom of their motives there lies a mystery. Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand. For all one knows that demon is simply the same instinct that makes a baby squall for attention.

Dallas: Who Shot J.R 2013?

Dallas S2 EP8

Hey guys, hope all swell. Better late than never, here’s the write up from last week’s episode. I’m watching episode 10 tonight and will post asap, I promise. In the meantime, enjoy my take on Season 2, Episode 8: J.R’s Masterpiece…

So, this was the episode the world was waiting for. The one where J.R was laid to rest. There was a change to the opening credits, which set a poignant tone as we bid farewell to one of television’s most enduring, iconic characters ever created. It was always going to be emotional. And my God, the writers didn’t disappoint. Before I get carried away, first things first. The series opened with the Ewings flying into Mexico, where J.R’s body had been discovered, in a rundown motel, of all places. Of course speculation was rife, because our J.R wouldn’t be seen dead in a place like that (pun intended). Still, as the scene unfolded, I found myself questioning the validity of the plot line. Sure, it’s a soap but come on, it’s nice to suspend belief and get sucked into an alternate universe where a mean and brooding John Ross gets handsy with anything that moves, and an equally ripped Christopher Ewing wanders about looking simultaneously hot and clueless at the same time (no mean feat).

Bobby put the Mexico plot in context when addressing the plastic inspector and assembled Ewing party, “None of this makes any sense. None of it.” No s**t Sherlock. (I have frequently thought Bobby should be a Private Investigator Superhero of sorts, he loves solving puzzles for the greater good as was evidenced by his discovery of Emma Brown’s ‘abduction’ a few episodes ago.)

Dallas / EP208

J.R’s funeral certainly drew a stellar ‘blast from the past’ crowd which included Cathy Podewell (Cally Harper) in fine and catty form. The exchange between Sue Ellen and Mandy Winger (Deborah Shelton) was priceless, in which it was established, “JR was hot as Hell and as bad as they come.” Those words should have been etched on his gravestone, (I think JR would approve.) Sue Ellen meanwhile was looking ravishing as ever. Her ensemble at the memorial was sublime (hat tip to her stylist) and I love the way she carries herself. Despite her eulogy to JR starting off with what sounded like an introduction to an AA meeting (“My name is Sue Ellen and I am drunk”) she still managed to look regal and I’m not ashamed to admit that I was a little teary eyed by her touching farewell to the love of her life and general bad egg, J.R.

As the genteel crowd sipped J.R’s favourite drink (Bourbon & Branch) at the wake, it was nice to see that the lovable scoundrel had a good turnout. But as with any worthwhile event, you get a gate-crasher and you couldn’t get a more unwelcome one than the positively elf like Cliff Barnes. Like the scorned wicked witch who turned up in Sleeping Beauty to cause a scene, Cliff rocked up, spouted a few vicious home-truths and disappeared in a puff of smoke. Sorry, I mean he was ushered away by the uncharacteristically sympathetic Rebecca Barnes (the girl still e-nun-ci-ates as if she’s addressing a nation of troglodytes).

Dallas S2 EP8

Cue a hilarious yet totally cute fisticuffs scene which saw Christopher throw the first punch as he leapt to his cousin’s defence. I’ve said this before; I love the chemistry that Jesse Metcalfe and Josh Henderson share. Watching them come together to unravel the mystery surrounding J.R’s death will be moving and entertaining in equal measure, because bless them, they’re not the brightest sparks in the world.

Did you notice the lingering camera shot on Emma Brown? This chick is one to watch. Don’t be fooled by her mainly contemplative demeanour, this girl has issues to fill twenty football fields. At J.R’s wake, she and John Ross shared a pill and a moment, which quickly led to the two making the most of the spacious back seat of her car. Now, two wrongs don’t make a right. But this oddball couple really go well together and I look forward to seeing what the writers have in store for them.

It wasn’t just about J.R’s funeral. Emma’s refusal to see daddy dearest is a nice sub-plot brewing, because a riled Harris Ryland is great fun to watch (you just know things are going to get nasty when he squints and mutters into the camera).

The episode ended on a cliff-hanger (see what I did there?). It transpired J.R was a man on mission in Mexico as Bum’s boxes revealed. No, that isn’t an unfortunate euphemism – Bum really did bring a box and distributed the contents as per J.R’s posthumous request. With Bobby blarting uncontrollably on his bed, it can only be a matter of time before we discover who killed J.R. Apparently, Cliff Barnes and Harris Ryland are involved. Things are about to get out of control, what with John Ross now in possession of a gun bequeathed by his late father. Not having J.R around is going to take some getting used to. But I have a feeling that John Ross is going to be just fine.

Birthday cake, cocktails & general mayhem…

Rhode_6709_534218259956231_575556778_nHey guys, how’s it going? It’s a chilly Tuesday afternoon and I’m hunkering down to my first blog of the week with prerequisite cup of coffee to hand (thank you to Rockstar Rosi at Rhode Island). So, what have you been up to? It’s been a fun few days. Two birthday celebrations, discovery of two restaurants and fleshing out a brand spanking new project has kept me (relatively) out of mischief.

A few days ago, I happened to stumble into the Beales Market Place Restaurant on the third floor. Granted, the voucher for free coffee initially piqued my interest. Which now leads me to say, to the barista doing her rounds during lunch hour dishing out free coffee vouchers – well played.  She must have a “coffee-addict-radar”, because she made a beeline for me whilst I was en route to another meeting at another café (cough, Costa, cough).

Bealesbolton-001I’ll always associate Beales (Whitakers in a former life) with my childhood. I remember first going to the restaurant with my mom when I was a precocious ten year old. I recall marvelling at the beautiful surroundings that seemed as grand as an Empress’s lounge. I fell in love with its art deco beauty and how grown up I felt taking tea there. Why haven’t I visited for a while? Well, a thing called life gets in the way. I moved away from Bolton and lived in many places (Derby, Nottingham and London are just a few to mention. Having recently revisited the café, I’ve fallen in love with it all over again and I know where I’ll be headed for a hit of nostalgia. If you’re after a cup of steaming hot coffee, or fat chips (that look and smell so delicious that you’ll want to dive in with all the finesse of an ex-Atkins acolyte), I urge you to check out the Beales Restaurant. They have some really great daily offers including a delectable carvery, whilst their lunch menu is bang on trend with seasonal changes that make the best of local produce.

Lucy_Cake401193_10152668622110307_2008172_nI also must add a very Happy Birthday to Gal Pal L and Cake Delight: thank you for the invites, you’re all gorgeous girlies and I love you and your cakes! The gorgeous birthday cupcake above was crafted in the magical kitchen of Cake Delight (do check them out if you can guys, their frosting is to die for). It was actually during the birthday celebrations at the weekend that I had the good fortune to dine at Danilo’s in Hale. It’s a pizzeria trattoria and that rare combination of classy kitsch, where prawn cocktail is delivered with aplomb and tastes delicious. The food was divine. Their Linguine al Granchio (linguine sautéed with fresh white crab, cherry tomatoes and drizzled with chilli and lime olive oil) is the best I’ve tasted up north, whilst their pink Prosecco was the perfect complement to a wonderful dining experience. I’ve earmarked their Lobster Ravioli for next time, because I know I’ll be headed there soon. It’s the waiting staff who were the icing on the cake; efficient, knowledgeable and on the right side of cheeky, they made a great night into an awesome one.

Another restaurant which is real grower is Bella Italia. Now, I’m generally not a fan of franchises, but I’m starting to really really like Bolton’s Middlebrook branch. The food is surprisingly ‘unfranchisey’ (I know that’s not a proper word). I dined there with latent cynicism, ready to dish out mental strikes with what I expected to be average, nondescript fayre. And I was pleasantly surprised. Well shocked, because I wasn’t expecting to adore their Diavola calzone. It was a steaming hot pillowy parcel that enveloped pepperoni, chicken, red onion and mozzarella. The spicy Arrabbiata sauce was downright delicious, and I couldn’t help delve into it. Note to Bella Italia – my date must think I’m a totally greedy pig, as he watched me demolish my calzone. Thank you. :-)

Their mains are seriously moreish, but don’t get me started on their desserts. Their Cookie Dough Lava Cake is heavenly. Really. I can’t help but crave their gooey, chewy, scrummy cookie and ice-cream concoction and cannot wait to pop in for my fortnightly visit this coming Sunday.

I also managed to do a bit more writing, discovered (and was blown away by) Reddit, and am currently fleshing out another really cool feature for the website. I promise to keep you posted when I finalise details. It’s looking to be another chocca week, as I cram in more writing, attend a buttercream class (bring on the frosting!) at Cake Delight amongst writing more reviews and general mayhem. Actually, whilst writing this, I think I’ll do a standalone post on the cake class which is due to take place on Thursday. OK, REALLY must dash. Have a smashing Tuesday guys!

Smooches, Axx
